Grant for Autism Meeting

The Autism Science Foundation recently announced that it is offering a
limited number of grants to parents of children with autism,
individuals with autism, and other stakeholders to support attendance
at the International Meeting for Autism Research (IMFAR), to be held
in Philadelphia, May 20-22, 2010. Awards of up to $1000 can be used to
cover registration, travel, accommodations, meals and other directly
related expenses, including childcare. After the conference, grant
recipients will be expected to share what they’ve learned with
families in their local communities and/or online.  For more information, see

Upcoming Workshop

Dr. Dan Crimmins & Ms. Stacey Ramirez  from the Center for Leadership in Disabilities at Georgia State University will be leading a workshop entitled "Positive Behavior Supports", on Saturday, March 27, from 9:30 to 2:30 at the Oconee Civic Center.  The workshop is for parents, teachers, paraprofessionals, and caregivers of persons with disabilities, and will provide valuable tools for addressing challenging behavior in a positive, supportive mannner.  Professional learning unit (PLU) credit will be available for Oconee teachers & staff.  Lunch is provided - FREE - by the Oconee Pilot Club!

Special Olympics!

It's time to begin planning (and training!) for Special Olympics!  Eligible athletes should have received their registration & medical forms at school - please contact your student's teacher if you haven't yet received one.  Our local Practice Day event will be held on Friday, March 26, at OCHS.  Lunch is being provided by the Rotary Club (thank you!!), and our athletes will practice their track & field events to get ready for the Area Games.

Parents who are interested in helping with our local event can contact me by email!  Your help is greatly appreciated!

Save the Date!  Special Olympics Area Games will be held on Friday, April 16, at Athens Christian School.  The Special Olympics Georgia State Games will take place May 21 - 23 at Emory University in Atlanta.   (Be sure to note that Saturday, May 22 is graduation day for both NOHS and OCHS.)

Online Parent Workshops

Parent to Parent of Georgia has archived several wonderful workshops that are now available online!  Use the Parent to Parent link on the sidebar on the left side of this page - then click on the education pulldown & look for "Archived Webinars".  Topics that are available include managing stress in families with a child with special needs, available services for young children, improving function through diet, and financial planning.  Be sure to take advantage of this wonderful resource!

First Friday Fun Night

Fun Night is held on the first Friday of the month at Winterville Baptist Church (305 N. Church Street). This event is for families of children with special needs. Stakeholder's Meeting

The special education stakeholder's group will have their second meeting of the year on Wednesday, March 3.  The group will cover topics including progress made on ideas from the last session, improving parent survey returns for 2010, and local Special Olympics planning.   This group is an invaluable resource for planning,  thanks to the participation of these parents, teachers, administrators, and community support providers!
