Fun at Pump It Up!

Pump It Up of Athens will host Sensory Night beginning Wednesday, August 25, and continuing on the last Wednesday of every month.  This "funtastic" time of play will feature lower volume music and dimmer lights, to accommodate the sensitivity of children with disabilities, particularly those on the autism spectrum.  It's from 5:30 til 7:00, and the cost is $7 per child (adults are free!).  Please call to make your reservation:  (706) 613-5675.  Have fun!

Autism 101

On Saturday, September 11, the Autism Society of America, Greater Georgia Chapter will host Autism 101, a seminar and resource fair for families living with autism.  There will be lots of information available, and contacts with area resource providers that specialize in autism.  This event will be held in Lawrencville, near Discover Mills.  For more information or to register (registration fee is $10), click  http://www.asaga.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=103&Itemid=182 .

New Soccer Program

The Barrow Youth Soccer Association will offer TOPSoccer this fall and spring.  This program is nationally recognized for bringing the opportunity to learn and play soccer to any child with a mental or physical disability.  It's open to children from 4 to 19 in Barrow and surrounding counties; practices and games will be on Sundays from 2:00 to 3:30 beginning September 12.  The cost is only $35 (which includes both fall & spring sessions, and a uniform).  Check this link for more information or to register:  http://www.barrowsoccer.com/index.php?page=24 .

Head to a Braves Game!

Two fundraisers will be held at Atlanta Braves home games the last weekend in August.  The Down Syndrome Association of Atlanta (DSAA) Night at Turner Field is on Saturday August 28; the game is at 4:00!  Get more information and reserve your tickets at http://atlantadsaa.org/get-involved/braves/.  Also,  Sunday August 29 is Autism Awareness Day with the Braves, and tickets are available for the 1:30 game at http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/atl/community/autism_awareness.jsp.   Both events will begin with a pre-game parade for families around the track at Turner Field!  These are great oppotunities to enjoy a day at the ballpark & help raise money for a wonderful cause!

Autism Society Meeting

The Northeast Georgia Chapter of the Autism Society of America will hold a meeting on Saturday, September 18, at 10 am, in the conference room of the Athens-Clarke County Public Library, 2025 Baxter Street.  Refreshments will be served, but no childcare is provided for this meeting.  The agenda will include election of officers & discussions of upcoming projects.  Make plans to attend!

Pediatric Exercise Class @ UGA

The fall semester of the Pediatric Exercise & Motor Development Clinic at UGA begins Tuesday, September 14, from 6:30 to 7:30, at the Ramsey Student Center.  This nine week class focuses on improving physical, motor and social interaction skills, and also serves as a teaching practicum for UGA students who will go on to careers working with students with disabilities.  It's also a lot of fun!  To register (cost is only $25.00!), or for more information, contact Dr. Michael Horvat, Director of the PEMD Clinic, at 706-542-4455 or mhorvat@uga.edu.

Music Therapy Classes @ UGA

UGA Community Music School Fall 2010 Music Therapy classes have been scheduled!   Classes meet on Thursdays, 5:15 - 6pm, from September 16 - November 18.  Tuition is only $90. 

If you're interested in music therapy, please attend the FREE Meet and Greet class on Thursday, September 9th at 5:15pm.  Enjoy a sample class, meet the teachers, and get a chance to meet other potential students in the class with no obligation to continue for the semester!  For those who don't want to miss out, you can register in advance ensuring your spot in class using the registration form on the CMS website - http://www.uga.edu/ugacms/musictherapy.html.   Students will also be given the opportunity to register at the Meet and Greet.    Please contact the CMS office, at the email address above, to let them know to expect you!
